Wallpaper Materials Guide

Three materials, and how to choose between them for your wall.

Materials

Every design is available in three materials. All three are Class A fire rated and Prop 65 compliant. They look and install differently, so choose based on your wall and your situation. Swatches are shown at 2× zoom — tap any swatch to enlarge it.

Before you order, check two things.

1. Your paint. Peel and stick wallpaper — fabric or vinyl — is not compatible with Sherwin Williams ProMar 400 Zero VOC paints, or any paint marketed as Stain-Resistant, Anti-Stain, or Anti-microbial, unless you first prime the wall with Roman Pro-935 R-35 Primer.

2. How recently you painted. If the wall has been painted recently, wait 30 days before installing. Fresh paint needs to fully cure and finish outgassing — installing sooner risks adhesion problems.

Around 99% of peel-and-stick failures come down to wall texture or paint incompatibility, and because everything is made to order we can't accept returns for wall incompatibility. If you're unsure, send us a photo first.

Common questions
What's the difference in finish between vinyl and fabric?
Fabric Peel & Stick is matte, over a very fine micro-weave. Vinyl Peel & Stick is smooth, with a slightly satin sheen. Both are durable and easy to clean.
Which material should I choose if I'm renting?
Fabric Peel & Stick. It removes without damaging paint, so you can put the wall back as you found it.
Which peel and stick material has the stronger adhesive?
Vinyl Peel & Stick — it has the higher tack of the two peel and stick materials. We recommend using it with the E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper. Unpasted Traditional isn't part of that comparison: it has no adhesive of its own, so how firmly it holds depends entirely on the paste your installer uses.
Will it work on a textured wall?
Unpasted Traditional suits slightly textured walls. For peel and stick, the more texture a wall has, the less surface area the adhesive can grip. While our vinyl peel and stick will adhere to moderately textured walls, heavily textured or bumpy walls may need skim-coating first. If you're unsure about your wall, send us a photo through chat or email [email protected] and we'll check before you order.
Which paints are not compatible?
Sherwin Williams ProMar 400 Zero VOC, and any paint marketed as Stain-Resistant, Anti-Stain or Anti-microbial. You can still use these walls if you first prime with Roman Pro-935 R-35 Primer.
I just painted — how long should I wait before installing?
Wait 30 days. Fresh paint needs to fully cure and finish outgassing before wallpaper goes on. Installing sooner is one of the most common causes of adhesion failure.
Are these fire rated? Are they Prop 65 compliant?
Yes to both. All three materials are Class A fire rated and Prop 65 compliant. Fabric Peel & Stick can also indirectly support LEED v4 credits through its material composition and environmental profile.
Can I use wallpaper in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes. All three materials handle bathroom and kitchen humidity, and all are water resistant — they can be wiped down with water and a damp cloth. Test any chemical cleaner in an inconspicuous spot first.
Is wallpaper paste included with unpasted wallpaper?
No. Unpasted Traditional needs heavy-weight wallpaper paste, supplied separately.

Wallpaper & Mural Roll Calculator

Measure each wall you want to cover and we'll recommend the roll size and quantity you need.

A soft gradient that shifts gently from top to bottom — calming rather than decorative, and one of the easiest ways to give a nursery or bedroom a finished, considered look without pattern.

This is a mural with a 4-roll repeat. The pattern is 96 inches wide, running across four panels before repeating, so each roll is a specific panel in the sequence — rolls are not interchangeable and a generic "spare roll" does not apply. Order the exact panels you need.

Mural patterns do not repeat vertically, so each roll length has its own unique artwork.

The mural design will not match between sizes — please order one size only.

Choosing your material

All three materials are Class A fire rated and Prop 65 compliant.

  • Fabric Peel & Stick — matte finish over a very fine micro-weave. Durable, easy to clean, and the easiest of the three to install. Can indirectly support LEED v4 credits through its material composition and environmental profile. The renter-friendly choice — removes without damaging paint.
  • Vinyl Peel & Stick — smooth with a slightly satin sheen, durable and easy to clean. Its high-tack removable adhesive is the stronger grip of the two peel and stick materials. The E-Z Hang Peel & Stick Helper is highly recommended.
  • Unpasted — Type II 20oz textured wallpaper, non-woven backing, hung with heavy-weight paste (paste not included). Widely used commercially. How firmly it holds, and how easily it comes off later, depends on the paste your installer uses.

Before you order: peel and stick is not compatible with Sherwin Williams ProMar 400 Zero VOC paints, or any paint marketed as Stain-Resistant, Anti-Stain or Anti-microbial, unless primed with Roman Pro-935 R-35. If the wall was painted recently, wait 30 days before installing. Full details in our Size & Materials Guide.

Common questions

Should I order a spare roll? No — not for this design. Each roll is a numbered panel in a 4-panel sequence, so an extra roll isn't interchangeable. Work out the exact panels you need, and contact us if you'd like us to check the quantities with you.

How wide is the full pattern? 96 inches — four 24 inch panels — before it repeats.

Can I mix roll lengths? No. The mural design will not match between sizes, so order a single roll length for the whole wall.

Can I get a custom size? Yes. Use the roll calculator on this page to work out your measurements, then send us a size request.

Does the pattern repeat vertically? No. The gradient runs once from top to bottom, so each roll length has its own unique artwork.
