How Much Wallpaper Do I Need for an Accent Wall? Simple Roll Math

The most common question we get in November is some version of “my wall is 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall, how many rolls do I need?” The answer takes about a minute of arithmetic once you know how the rolls are sized. This guide walks through it, with worked examples for the wall sizes people ask about most, so you can order once and not run short the weekend before guests arrive.

The short answer

Our rolls are 24 inches wide. Measure the wall width in inches, divide by 24, and round up. That is your roll count. Then measure the wallpapered height, not the ceiling height: from the top of the baseboard to the ceiling, or to the bottom of the crown moulding if there is one. Choose the roll length that is at least 2 to 4 inches longer than that number: 60, 96, 108 or 122 inches. Add one spare roll. Done.

Step 1: count the rolls across

Rolls hang side by side, so the width of the wall decides how many you need. Do not subtract windows or doors unless they run floor to ceiling. It is easier to hang over a window and trim around it than to piece in narrow strips on either side.

• 8 ft wall = 96 in ÷ 24 = 4 rolls
• 10 ft wall = 120 in ÷ 24 = 5 rolls
• 12 ft wall = 144 in ÷ 24 = 6 rolls
• 14 ft wall = 168 in ÷ 24 = 7 rolls
• 15 ft wall = 180 in ÷ 24 = 7.5, so 8 rolls
• 16 ft wall = 192 in ÷ 24 = 8 rolls

Step 2: measure the wallpapered height, then pick the roll length

This is where most ordering mistakes happen. The number you need is not the ceiling height. It is the height of the part of the wall that actually gets papered, which stops at the baseboard below and at the ceiling or crown moulding above. Measure it with a tape, from the top edge of the baseboard straight up.

Take a standard 8 foot ceiling, which is 96 inches. Most rooms have a 3 to 4 inch baseboard, so the wallpapered height is 92 or 93 inches. The 24 x 96 inch roll clears that with 3 to 4 inches to trim, and it is the right choice.

Now take the same 8 foot ceiling with no baseboard and no ceiling trim. The wallpapered height is the full 96 inches. A 96 inch roll would have to land exactly on both edges with nothing to spare, and walls are never that square. Go up to the 24 x 108 inch roll so there is excess at the top and bottom to trim away after installation for a perfect fit.

The same logic applies at every ceiling height:

• 8 ft ceiling (96 in) with a baseboard: wallpapered height about 92 to 93 in, use the 96 in roll.
• 8 ft ceiling with no baseboard or trim: wallpapered height 96 in, use the 108 in roll.
• 9 ft ceiling (108 in) with a baseboard: wallpapered height about 104 to 105 in, use the 108 in roll.
• 9 ft ceiling with no baseboard or trim: wallpapered height 108 in, use the 122 in roll.
• 10 ft ceiling (120 in) with a baseboard: wallpapered height about 116 to 117 in, use the 122 in roll.
• Half walls, wainscot panels, bookcase backs and stair risers: the 60 in roll.

You always want a few inches of extra length so you can trim a clean edge at the ceiling and at the baseboard. Ceilings are rarely level, floors slope, and that extra covers the difference. If your wallpapered height lands within an inch or two of a roll length, take the next size up.

Step 3: add one spare roll

Every roll we make is printed to order. Print lots vary very slightly over time, so a top-up order placed three weeks later may not be a perfect colour match to the rolls already on your wall. One spare roll covers a mis-cut, a wrong-way panel, a corner that needed more overlap than you expected, and the strip behind the sideboard you forgot to measure.

Worked examples

Dining room accent wall, 12 ft wide, 8 ft ceiling, 4 inch baseboard. Wallpapered height 92 in. 144 ÷ 24 = 6 rolls, plus 1 spare, 96 inch length. Order 7 rolls of 24 x 96.

Same dining room wall, but no baseboard and no crown. Wallpapered height 96 in. Still 6 rolls plus 1 spare, but in the 108 inch length so there is excess to trim. Order 7 rolls of 24 x 108.

Powder room, four walls totalling 22 ft, 8 ft ceiling, 3 inch baseboard. Wallpapered height 93 in. 264 ÷ 24 = 11 rolls, plus 1 spare, 96 inch length. Order 12 rolls of 24 x 96. Do not subtract the door; hang over it and trim.

Entryway wall, 6 ft wide, 9 ft ceiling, 4 inch baseboard. Wallpapered height 104 in. 72 ÷ 24 = 3 rolls, plus 1 spare, 108 inch length. Order 4 rolls of 24 x 108.

Living room feature wall, 16 ft wide, 10 ft ceiling, 4 inch baseboard. Wallpapered height 116 in. 192 ÷ 24 = 8 rolls, plus 1 spare, 122 inch length. Order 9 rolls of 24 x 122.

What about pattern repeat?

Most of our wallpapers are a single-roll repeat, which means every roll is identical and interchangeable, and the pattern lines up when you hang rolls side by side starting from the same top edge. You do not need to buy extra for the repeat the way you would with a traditional 20-inch paper that repeats every 25 inches. The repeat size is listed on every product page. Murals are different: they are printed as numbered panels sized to your wall, so you give us the wall dimensions and we handle the math.

What it costs

Prices vary by pattern and material and are listed on each product page. As a reference point, a 24 x 96 inch roll of our Brick Wallpaper is $89 in vinyl peel and stick or $99 in fabric peel and stick, so a 12 foot accent wall with a spare roll is roughly $625 to $700. A $5 small sample or a $27 24 x 24 inch sample is the cheapest way to confirm the colour before committing to seven rolls.

Frequently asked questions

How much wallpaper do I need for a 10 x 10 room?

Four walls of 10 feet is 40 feet, or 480 inches. 480 ÷ 24 = 20 rolls, plus one spare, in the length that clears your wallpapered height. Subtract nothing for a standard door and window.

My ceiling is exactly 8 feet with no baseboard. Which roll length?

The 108 inch roll. A 96 inch roll would have to fit a 96 inch wall with zero excess, and there would be nothing to trim for a clean edge. With a baseboard or crown moulding taking 3 to 4 inches off the wallpapered height, the 96 inch roll is fine.

Should I order 10 percent extra?

The old 10 percent rule is for traditional papers with a large repeat. For a single-roll repeat, one spare roll is the better rule, and for very wide walls, two.

Do I measure in feet or inches?

Inches. Rolls are 24 inches wide and lengths are in inches, so converting once at the start avoids mistakes.

What if my wall is wider than my roll count covers exactly?

Always round up. A 15 foot wall needs 7.5 rolls, so order 8, and the half roll left over is your spare.
