How Long Does It Take to Wallpaper a Room? A Thanksgiving Countdown

If you want a new wall up before Thanksgiving, the wallpapering itself is the fast part. An accent wall with peel and stick wallpaper takes an afternoon. What catches people out is the calendar around it: ordering, shipping, waiting for paint to cure, and leaving a buffer for a mistake. This guide gives real time estimates for each step and a working-backwards schedule from Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026.

The short answer

A single accent wall with peel and stick wallpaper takes 1 to 3 hours once the rolls are in your hands. A powder room takes 3 to 5 hours. A full dining room takes a day, sometimes two if there are windows, doors and a tricky corner. Add about a week for a made-to-order roll to be printed and delivered, so ordering by mid-November leaves a comfortable margin for Thanksgiving.

How long each part actually takes

Printing and shipping. Every roll we sell is printed to order in our Ramsey, New Jersey studio and usually ships in about 1 to 3 business days. Domestic orders go USPS Priority Mail, which typically takes another 1 to 3 days. Call it a week door to door, a little less in the Northeast and a little more on the West Coast.

Wall prep. Thirty minutes to an hour. Wipe the wall with mild soap and water, let it dry, fill nail holes, remove outlet covers and mark a plumb line for the first strip. This is the step people skip and then blame the wallpaper.

Hanging. A 10 to 12 foot accent wall with a simple repeat is 1 to 2 hours for a first-timer. Murals with numbered panels go slightly faster because there is no pattern matching. Walls with a window, a door and two outlets take about twice as long as a blank wall of the same size.

Trimming and touch-up. Twenty minutes. Trim the top and bottom with a fresh blade, replace the outlet covers, and press every seam once more with the squeegee.

Room-by-room time estimates

• Accent wall behind the dining table: 1 to 3 hours
• Powder room (all four walls, small): 3 to 5 hours
• Entryway or hallway wall: 1 to 2 hours
• Full dining room or living room: 1 day, or a weekend if there are lots of cuts
• Stair risers: about 10 minutes per step

These assume peel and stick. Traditional unpasted wallpaper adds paste mixing, booking time and drying, so budget roughly double, and it is not the material to learn on the week of a holiday.

The Thanksgiving countdown

Work backwards from Thursday, November 26.

• Now through late October: order a sample. A $5 swatch or a 24 x 24 inch sample lets you check the colour against your dining chairs and your lighting at dinner time, which is when the room will actually be seen.
• If you plan to paint first, finish painting by October 22. Peel and stick wallpaper needs 30 days on fresh paint before it goes up, otherwise the adhesive can bond to uncured paint and pull it off on removal. There is no shortcut on this one.
• Order rolls by Friday, November 13. That gets the wallpaper to you around November 20, in time for the weekend before Thanksgiving.
• Last call: Tuesday, November 17. Rolls ship by Friday the 20th and land Monday or Tuesday. You can still hang a wall on Wednesday evening, but you have no buffer for a wrong colour or a short roll.
• Weekend of November 21 and 22: hang the wall. Give yourself the full weekend even if it only takes an afternoon.
• Thanksgiving week: hang art, move furniture back, and do nothing else to that wall.

The same math for December parties

For a party on Saturday, December 12, order by December 2. For Christmas Eve hosting, order by December 11, and earlier if you can, because postal volume climbs through December and Priority Mail can slow by a day or two.

Three things that add days you did not plan for

Ordering too few rolls. Measure the wall width, divide by 24 inches, round up, and add one spare roll. Each roll is printed to order and a top-up order weeks later may not colour match exactly. Running one roll short the weekend before Thanksgiving means a second shipping window you do not have.

Textured or glossy walls. Light texture is fine with our vinyl peel and stick, but heavy knockdown or popcorn needs skim coating and priming first, and that primer needs its own cure time. See our guide to textured walls before you order.

Stain-resistant paint. Paints marketed as stain-resistant, anti-stain or anti-microbial, and Sherwin Williams ProMar 400 Zero VOC, repel peel and stick adhesive. If your wall has one of these, it needs a coat of Roman Pro-935 R-35 primer first. Check the can, or the paint receipt, before you order.

Can I hang peel and stick wallpaper the day before guests arrive?

Yes. There is no drying time and no smell, so the room is usable as soon as you replace the outlet covers. It is still better to hang it a few days early so you can spot a lifted edge and press it back down.

Is it faster to paint or to wallpaper an accent wall?
