Wall Decals vs Wall Stickers: Which One Do You Want?

People use the two words interchangeably, and on this page you will find both, but they are different products and it helps to know which you are buying. A wall decal is a thin cut-vinyl transfer. It has no background, so what goes on the wall is only the shape itself, and once it is down the edges look painted on. Placement is final: you position it carefully, apply it, and it stays. A wall sticker is a printed vinyl piece, thicker, with the design printed onto it. It can be lifted and repositioned during installation, which makes it the more forgiving choice for a first project or for a child who wants to move things around. Both are removable without damaging paint. If you want the cleanest, most painted-on look, choose a decal. If you want to be able to change your mind, choose a sticker.

Wall Decals by Room

The living room decals run to large trees, branches, botanicals and quotes that work as a single statement over a sofa or console. For a bedroom, the same trees scale to a headboard wall, and quieter pieces like moon-and-stars or dot sets suit a room that is meant to be calm. The nursery and kids collection is the biggest group we make: trees with owls and birds, safari and woodland animals, growth charts, alphabets and the personalised name decals, all of which come off cleanly when the room changes in a few years. The playroom decals lean brighter and busier: outer space, dinosaurs, maps, chalkboards you can actually write on.

Wall Decals by Type

Trees are what we are known for. The tree decal collection has sixty of them, from bare winter branches to full cherry blossoms, and the family tree decals are the original photo gallery tree, made to hang framed pictures across the branches. Beyond trees: animals from birds to dinosaurs, florals, lettering and quotes, chalkboard decals you can draw on and wipe, holiday decals that come down in January, outer space and polka dots. Most designs come in a choice of colour schemes, and any decal can be made in a custom colour from our chart.

Coordinating a Decal With the Room You Already Have

The mistake people make is choosing a decal in isolation and then finding it fights the room. Three things to check first. Colour: pick a decal colour that already exists in the room, in the trim, a rug, a cushion, so it reads as belonging there rather than arriving from outside. Scale: measure the wall and the furniture in front of it, then pick a size that clears the furniture by a hand's width or sits well above it; most of our trees come in two or three sizes and the bottom of a trunk can be trimmed. Quantity: one large decal reads as a design decision, many small ones read as decoration, and a room rarely wants both on the same wall. Applying and Removing Wall Decals

Decals arrive in sections with an application tool and instructions. Tape the sections to the wall first and step back before anything is stuck down; because placement is final, this dry-fit is the step that matters. They go onto smooth and lightly textured walls. If your wall was painted in the last thirty days, wait; fresh paint has not cured and the vinyl will not bond properly. To remove, lift a corner and peel slowly. Decals come off without taking paint with them, but a transfer decal cannot be reused once it is down, so if you expect to move it, a sticker is the better buy. Frequently Asked Questions

Will a wall decal damage my paint?

No. Decals are designed to remove cleanly from painted walls without pulling paint or leaving residue, which is why they work in rentals.

Can I reposition a decal if I get it wrong?

Not a decal. A cut-vinyl transfer is final once applied, which is why we recommend taping the sections up first. If you want to be able to move it, choose a wall sticker.

Do they work on textured walls?

On smooth and lightly textured walls, yes. Heavily textured or bumpy walls do not give the vinyl enough surface to bond. Send us a photo through chat if you are not sure.

How big are they?

It varies by design. Our large trees run up to nine feet wide; sets of small pieces are sized individually. Every product page lists the dimensions, and most designs come in more than one size.

Can I get a custom colour or size?

Yes. Choose Other in the colour options and name a colour from our chart, or contact us for a custom size. Because everything is made to order, custom work is routine.
