What Makes a Stair Riser Sticker Different From Wallpaper

It is the same printed vinyl we use for wallpaper, but cut and packed for stairs. Each strip is one riser, 48 inches wide and made in the height your risers actually are, so there is no roll to cut down and no waste. And it is repositionable: you press it on, and if it is a hair crooked you lift it and lay it again. With a stair riser sticker, the installation is the product — it is the reason people choose these over paint, tile or wallpaper off the roll.

How to Put Them On

Count your risers — the vertical faces between the steps — and measure the height of one. Order that many strips in the closest of the four heights: 6, 6.5, 7 or 7.5 inches. When they arrive, wipe each riser clean and let it dry. Peel back a few inches of the backing, align the top edge of the strip with the top of the riser, and smooth it down with a card or your hand, working the backing off as you go. If a bubble or a crooked edge appears, lift the strip and re-lay it. Move to the next riser. A typical staircase of twelve to fourteen risers takes an afternoon. No paste, no primer, no drying time, and no knife unless your risers are narrower than 48 inches and need a trim.

Renting, Kids, and Changing Your Mind

Stickers go on painted, primed or finished wood, including varnished and polyurethaned risers, and they are for the riser face only, not the treads. Because they peel off again, they suit a rental where paint is not allowed, a kid's staircase that will want a different pattern in three years, or anyone who likes to change things seasonally. They are made to order in our Ramsey, New Jersey studio, ship in one to three business days, and are best ordered all at once so the whole flight comes from the same print run. Frequently Asked Questions

Are they really repositionable?

Yes, during installation. Lift a corner and re-lay the strip if the placement is off. Once it is where you want it, press it down firmly and leave it.

Will they damage the wood when they come off?

They are designed to peel off painted, primed and finished wood. As with any adhesive product, a sound and fully cured finish releases best — test a hidden corner if the finish is old or flaking.

Can I use them on the treads?

No. Stair riser stickers are for the vertical riser face only.

How many do I need?

One strip per riser. Strips come in 3-packs and 6-packs; most staircases have twelve to fourteen risers, so two 6-packs usually covers it.
