How to Cut Peel and Stick Wallpaper Around Outlets Cleanly

Clean outlet cuts are one of the small details that make peel-and-stick wallpaper look polished instead of improvised. Outlets, switches, and cover plates naturally catch the eye, especially in kitchens, entryways, home offices, and commercial spaces where people stand close to the wall.

When you know how to cut peel-and-stick wallpaper with patience, this step is very manageable. We recommend working slowly, measuring twice, and remembering that the cover plate will hide a small amount of the trimmed edge. A fresh fall wallpaper update can make your room feel ready for entertaining, holiday guests, or more cozy time indoors.

Gather Tools and Prepare the Area

A little prep helps prevent rushed cuts, torn wallpaper, and uneven edges. Before hanging your panel, gather everything you will need so you are not hunting for a tool while the wallpaper is partially installed.

  • Sharp utility knife with replacement blades
  • Screwdriver for removing the cover plate
  • Smoothing tool or squeegee
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Clean microfiber cloth and a container for scraps

Fresh blades make a real difference. A dull blade can drag across peel-and-stick wallpaper, pull the design, or leave a fuzzy edge. If your blade starts catching or tearing the material, stop and replace it before continuing.

Safety comes first around anything electrical. We recommend turning off power at the circuit breaker before removing an outlet or switch cover plate. If you have a noncontact voltage tester, use it to confirm the power is off. Only remove the cover plate, not the outlet, switch, wiring, or electrical box parts. If you are unsure about any electrical step, a qualified electrician is the right person to call.

Before applying the wallpaper, wipe dust and debris from the wall and around the cover plate area. The surface should be dry, smooth, and free of loose paint. It also helps to review the installation directions for your Simple Shapes wallpaper design before getting started.

Position the Panel Before Trimming

The best outlet cut begins with good wallpaper placement. Align the panel at the top of the wall, make sure the design is level, and match the pattern to the panel beside it if your wallpaper has a repeat. This matters even more with murals, bold geometric prints, and large-scale designs where a shifted panel can be easy to spot.

Instead of peeling away all the backing paper at once, apply the panel gradually. Smooth downward and outward as you go, using your smoothing tool to press out air bubbles. Stop when you reach the outlet area.

At this point, gently press the wallpaper over the outlet location to feel where the edges are. Keep the panel flat against the wall, but do not make a large opening based on a guess. Taking an extra moment here helps keep the pattern straight and the final opening small enough for the cover plate to conceal.

Make Small, Controlled Cuts

Once the cover plate is off and the wallpaper is properly positioned, make a small X-shaped cut in the middle of the outlet opening. Keep the first cuts short and conservative. You can always make an opening larger, but you cannot easily fix a cut that goes too far past the electrical box.

The X will create four small triangular flaps. Fold each flap back gently, then trim one area at a time with light, steady passes of the utility knife. Our goal is to cut close to the outside edge of the electrical box opening while leaving a narrow bit of wallpaper underneath the cover plate.

A few helpful reminders can keep this step clean:

  • Cut gradually toward the corners instead of making one big cut.
  • Keep pressure light so the blade does not push into the wall or box.
  • Replace the blade right away if the wallpaper begins to pull.
  • Do not leave loose wallpaper inside the electrical box opening.

There is no need to create a perfectly wide, exposed opening. The cover plate is designed to hide the finished edge, so a slightly smaller cut is usually better than an oversized one. After trimming, smooth the wallpaper around the opening and check that it lies flat.

Reinstall the Cover Plate and Check Your Work

The cover plate is the finishing touch that makes the outlet area look neat and intentional. Before putting it back on, inspect the wallpaper edge for tiny scraps, lifted corners, or pieces that extend too far into the opening. Make only small adjustments as needed. Overtrimming can create a visible gap that the plate cannot cover.

Carefully reinstall the cover plate and tighten the screws only until the plate sits flush against the wall. Tightening too much can crack some plastic plates or press unevenly against the wallpaper. Once the cover is secure, turn the power back on and test the outlet or switch.

If you notice an edge peeking out from behind the plate, use a fresh blade to trim it slowly. A visible gap outside the cover plate may call for a small matching wallpaper patch, depending on the design and where the gap sits. Step back and view the wall from normal room distance before making more changes. Tiny imperfections often disappear once the plate is in place.

Finish Your Fall Room Refresh with Confidence

A clean outlet cut can make an accent wall, backsplash area, bedroom, office, or rental-friendly refresh feel much more complete. Our removable wallpaper, murals, wall decals, stair riser decals, and art prints give you flexible ways to bring more personality into a space as the season changes.

Take your time with the final details. Measure carefully, trim in small steps, keep a sharp blade nearby, and let the cover plate do its job. With a calm approach, your outlet edges can look tidy, intentional, and professionally finished.
