Herringbone, Not Chevron

The two get confused, and it matters when you are choosing. In a chevron the pieces meet point to point in a clean V. In a herringbone each piece is offset from the next, so the zigzag is broken and the pattern has the woven, brick-laid texture of a parquet floor or a tweed jacket. Herringbone reads as older and more tailored; chevron reads as more graphic. This collection is the herringbone side, with one chevron-herringbone hybrid for anyone who wants both. For the pure V, see the geometric collection.

Seven Versions of the Pattern

The tile pattern herringbone is drawn like a tiled floor, with a fine grout line, and is the one most people picture. The solid version drops the grout for a cleaner, more modern block. The line herringbone is the most minimal: just the outline, on a plain ground, so it works almost as a texture. The two-tone alternates colour across the weave. The watercolor herringbone is our best seller here, with soft painted edges in Van Deusen Blue, Misty Blue, Winter Grey and Beige Grey. And the whitewashed barn-wood planks mural takes the pattern up to full plank scale for a feature wall.

Where Herringbone Works

Small and mid-scale herringbone is a natural in bathrooms and powder rooms, where it echoes tile; in an entry or hallway, where a directional pattern draws the eye along the space; and behind a bed or a desk as a feature wall that does not fight the furniture. The barn-wood mural is a whole-wall decision and suits a living room, den or bedroom where you want the wood look without the lumber. Lighter colourways make a small room feel larger; the darker two-tones are for a room with good light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does herringbone need to be pattern-matched between rolls?

Yes, like any repeating pattern. The repeat is on the product page and the calculator accounts for it; order one spare roll per project.

Is the pattern horizontal or vertical?

The zigzag runs vertically on most of these, which lengthens a wall. The barn-wood mural runs the planks in a herringbone across the wall.

Which one for a bathroom?

The tile-pattern or line herringbone in vinyl peel and stick, which wipes clean and tolerates humidity.

Do you make herringbone stair risers too?

Yes. The same patterns are cut for stairs in the stair riser tiles collection.
