What a Stair Riser Cover Is For

Risers take more abuse than almost any other surface in a house. Toe scuffs from years of climbing, chipped paint along the top edge, the holes from an old carpet runner, or simply a colour the previous owner chose. The traditional fix is to sand, fill, prime, paint two coats, and keep everyone off the stairs for a day. A stair riser cover is a printed vinyl strip that goes over the riser face and hides all of it at once — no prep beyond a wipe-down, no drying time, and it peels off again if you ever want the wood back.

Choosing a Finish That Reads as Real

This collection is deliberately the quiet end of our stair risers: finishes that look like a material rather than a print. Solid white gives the classic painted-riser look with none of the painting. Canvas, linen, burlap and weathered-fabric looks add texture without pattern. Wood and parquet looks warm up a painted staircase. Concrete and speckle suit a more modern flight. What They Cover — and What They Don't

Riser covers stick to painted, primed or finished wood, including varnished and polyurethaned surfaces, and they hide scuffs, discolouration, faded paint and minor chips completely. What they will not do is bridge a gouge or a hole — a thin vinyl follows the surface underneath it, so fill deep damage, let it cure and sand it smooth first, then cover. They are for the vertical riser face only, not for treads. A cover is a finish, not a structural repair.

Sizing, Ordering and Removal

Strips are 48 inches wide and come in 6, 6.5, 7 and 7.5 inch heights. Measure one riser, choose the closest height, and order one strip per riser — packs of three or six, and most staircases need twelve to fourteen. A 6 x 6 inch sample lets you check the finish against your treads and trim before committing. Everything is made to order in our Ramsey, New Jersey studio and ships in about one to three business days. Order the whole staircase at once so every strip comes from the same print run. During installation the vinyl is repositionable; afterwards it stays put until you decide to peel it off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a cover hide chipped paint?

Minor chips and flaking along the edges, yes. Deep chips or gouges should be filled and sanded first, because the vinyl will show what is underneath it.

Isn't it easier to just paint the risers?

Painting means sanding, priming, two coats and a staircase out of action for a day. A cover is an afternoon with no drying time, and unlike paint it comes off cleanly when you want a change.

Can I put them on the treads too?

No. Covers are for the vertical riser face only.

Can I remove them when I sell the house?

Yes. They are designed to peel off painted, primed and finished wood. As with any adhesive product, a sound, fully cured finish releases best; test a hidden corner first on old or flaking paint.
